Look out for the Green Tick!

During August and September, ReFiesta volunteers Aidan, Alan, Mark, Mel, Ursula and Vijay pounded the streets of Leicester to find out what steps venues had taken already to improve sustainability, for example, banning plastic straws to increasing local, organic and plant-based menu choices.

We’re delighted that 13 venues had already made at least five changes to the way they do things to make their business more sustainable. These venues are marked with a Green Tick in this brochure and will be entered for a Leicester Comedy Festival Award.

You can support local venues to become greener by choosing to go to gigs at a Green Tick venue and using your purchasing power to buy sustainable food and drink. There are also lots of general things you can do to reduce your impact on the environment, such as walking, cycling and travelling by public transport as much as you can, or carrying a reusable cup or water bottle.  For more ideas, check out our green guides for audiences, venues and performers.

Firebug Silver Award winners 2018

And the winner is…

Five Green Tick venues went on to undergo a full sustainability impact assessment from the University of Leicester’s Innovation Hub student ambassadors – Brewdog, Queen of Bradgate, Black Horse Aylestone, Firebug and The Y.

The results were really close, with all five venues achieving a Silver rating from the University of Leicester for the steps they had taken to run their business sustainably.

In the end the highest score went to Firebug, who were presented with the Greening Up Your Patch award at the Leicester Comedy Awards 2019.
